Researchers from Samsung Labs have recently designed a neural head avatar technology that can generate images with megapixel resolution. This system is based on an animated driving image. The team has come up with specific neural architectures and training methods to address the issue of cross-driving synthesis.

This technology has been used to create realistic avatars of famous people, both from the past and the present. When the system is supplied with a driving video of somebody making different facial expressions and movements, it applies it to a static image, such as a photo or a painting. This results in a motion graphic where the head and face of the subject match the movements of the driving image.
